25th graduation ceremony of the College of Engineering at the National University of Science and Technology

A number of 626 graduate students have been proudly honoured at the 25th graduation ceremony of the College of Engineering at the National University of Science and Technology which was held on January 8, 2020 at Al Bustan Palace Hotel in Muscat. The ceremony was under the patronage of HE Darwish bin Ismail bin Ali Al Balushi, the Minister Responsible for Financial Affairs.

The ceremony started with a welcome address by NU Pro Chancellor and  UEB Chairman Dr P Mohamed Ali where he thanked HE HE Darwish bin Ismail bin Ali Al Balushi, The patronage of the ceremony for grassing the event.

In this ceremony, 30 students graduated with Master’s degree in collaboration with GCU and USC. While the majority of 592 students graduated with Bachelor of Honours degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Aided Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and Mechatronics.

Special Awards for achievements were presented by the COE. The awards included Sheikh Salim Al Fannah Al Araimi Academic Excellence Award, Late Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Fannah Al Araimi Citizenship Award, Meritorious Award UG, and the Outstanding Research Project Award for those who excellently contributed in each engineering discipline at different levels.  

The Academic Excellence Award for the UG programme students was granted to Hassan Ibrahim Abdulrahman from the Mechanical Department while Late Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Fannah Al Araimi Citizenship Award was granted to Qais Mohammed Bakeer Yahya Al Jedyani and Lujaina Talib Ahmed Al Ajmi.

The Meritorious Award for UG students was granted to Award: Abdullah Mohamed Issa Al Wahibi, Hassan Ibrahim Abdulrahman, Munthir Issa Mohamed Al Khanjari, Adhari Abdullah Moahamed Al Yahmadi, Asha Abdalla Saleh, Ibrahim Shabbir Mohammadli, Noor Moosa Ali Al Muaini, Mohammad Ahmed Asif, Luai Abdullah Ishaq Ali Al Ajmi, Yousef Omar Abed Elhafiz Al Awamleh, and Malak Saleh Khamis Al Wahibi. Two PG students were granted this Award; Bushra Salim Nasser Al Rahbi and Ibtisam Suliaman Khalfan Al Hosni.

The Outstanding Research Project Award was granted to Wafa Abdullah Ziyad Al Hamami( PG Process engineering) and Aaisha Mohammed Sulaiman Al Maktumi (UG Chemical Engineering).

Representatives from affiliate universities, GCU, USC and VITU confirmed the degrees awarded. Dignitaries, ambassadors and the members of the Board of Trustee have attended the ceremony beside NU executives and staff.

The Chief Guest was honoured by Sheikh Salim bin Said bin Hamed Al Fannah Al Araimi, NU Chancellor,NU of Science & Technology and Dr. P Mohammed Ali  Pro Chancellor and Chairman of University Executive Board.

In order to build a solid platform of academic education, the College of Engineering adopted collaboration plan with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) in the UK, the VIT University in India and the University of South Carolina, provide world class Higher Education in the Sultanate.

With an eye targeting the future, the National University of Science and Technology shapes its vision in order to become an internationally recognized and renowned academic institution for education and research fostered by social values. The university had a step forward in order to make its mission practical in real life by means of transforming its graduates to be useful citizens worldwide equipped with the necessary knowhow  to serve their communities in a professional manner.  

One of the most important aspects and goals of the programmes introduced by the College of Engineering is to meet the needs of the industries. In order to achieve this objective the college is engaged in different activities in collaburations with different business sectors. . Besides the workplace experience, the college of engineering gives more importance to the development of entrepreneurial and soft skills training in all engineering programmes as stated by the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Ahmed Al Balushi, “Students need to have the basic subject knowledge and deep expertise in their specialization; however, we believe they equally need development as individuals so that they can work effectively and operate in teams, across disciplines”. Furthermore, the College of Engineering has an active student chapter of some academic and engineering bodies like the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE).

The college of engineering, as a main body of the National University of Science and Technology, plays a major part in providing the job market with skilled engineers as more than 70% of the alumni get employment chances in different industrial locally and internationally.
