Various strategies and sustainability rating systems are briefly discussed. The role of designer’s and building service engineers towards sustainable buildings is explained.  Concept of environmentally friendly construction materials, utilization of industrial wastes, energy-efficient buildings, recycling of all type of waste materials etc are discussed in detail and the research works being carried out in Sultan Qaboos University is listed. Suggestions to implement the strategies by the government of Oman are summarized.
