National University hosts Oman Pharmaceutical Conference 2019

The Oman Pharmaceutical Conference 2019was organized by the College of Pharmacy, National University of Science and Technologyon 3rd and 4thDecember, 2019 at the college campus, Muscat with the theme “Empowering Pharmacists in Healthcare and Medication Safety”. Prof. Simon Jones, Vice Chancellor of NU welcomed the guests at the conference which was inaugurated under the auspices of His Excellency Dr. Hilal Ali Al Hinai, Secretary General, The Research Council of Oman. He released the conference proceedings and honored the speakers and sponsors for the event. Dr. SalimKhamis Al Araimi, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost, NU and chair of the organizing committee felicitated the chief guest.Mr. Mohiuddin Mohamed Ali, Director, NU was also present. The keynote address was given by Dr. Suresh Madhavan, Dean and Professor, System College of Pharmacy, University of North Texas Health Science Centre, Texas, USA. He spoke on the topic “Empowering Pharmacists for Innovative Roles in Healthcare and Medication Safety in Oman”. Dr. Mohammed Hamdan Al Rubai`e,Director General of Pharmaceutical Affairs and Drug Control, MOH, Sultanate of Oman chaired the session. Dr. Suresh Madhavan highlighted how the Pharmacist can play an important role in medication safety.

Inaugural session was well attended by the officials from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Higher Education, WHO, Pharma industry, professionals, students, and print visual media.   Dr. Jayasekhar P Nair, Acting Dean, College of Pharmacy proposed a vote of thanks. Later His Excellency inaugurated the Pharma exhibition. . 

The two-day event accredited by the Oman Medical Specialty Board was attended by more than 250 delegates including pharmacists, clinical pharmacists, students and other healthcare professionals from Oman and outside.The conference provided a variety of events including plenary lectures, workshops, panel discussions, pharma exhibition and poster presentations highlighting research in the field of Pharmacy. Several Pharmaceutical establishments in Oman supported the conference.

The sessions started with a lecture on medication safety culture in the middle East by Dr.Thamer Al Shammari, Medication Safety Research Chair, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. His lecture was followed by Dr. M. Ramesh, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice, JSS College of  Pharmacy, Mysore, India who spoke on “Medication Without Harm – A Global Patient Safety Challenge”. Ph. Anwar Ali Al Muslim, Clinical Pharmacist, Maternity and Children Hospital, MoH, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia highlighted about medication Errors in Pediatric Population.Dr.MoustafaFahmy Mohamed, Dean, Oman College of Health science, MOH chaired the session and gave the insights on medication safety. The session on Pharmacovigilance was chaired by Dr. Saleh Al Khusaiby, Strategic Health Advisor, NU. The speakers were Ph. Husain Al Ramimmy, Director of Pharmacovigilance, DGPA &DC, MoH, Oman and Dr.SathvikB.Sridhar.

The session on “Patient safety” was chaired by Dr.Amna Al Hashar, Deputy HoD, Pharmacy Department, SQUH, Sultanate of Oman..It was conducted by Ph. Sara Al Balushi, Director, Pharmaceutical Care Department, Directorate General of Medical Supplies, MOH, Oman. She spoke on “Drug-related Problems in Oman: Classifications and Opportunities for Pharmacists’ Interventions”  Her lecture was followed by a talk on “Medication safety in the management of diabetes in Oman” by Dr.Mukesh Bhandari, Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, NU, Sohar. Ph. ShireenImambakhshAlzadjali,Pediatric hematology/oncology clinical pharmacist, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat spoke on “Clinical pharmacist’s interventions; Promoting medications with-out harm.

The other topics of interest in drug discovery ranged from “Minor Components of Major crops with biological efficacy and therapeutic potential” presented byDr. SarangBani, Senior Advisor R&D, Sami labs ltd, Bangalore, India and “Potential of Omani plant products in the management of Neurodegenerative diseases” by Dr. Shah Alam Khan, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, College of Pharmacy, NU, Muscat. Dr. Zuhair bin Saleh AL Salti, Head of Pharmacy & Medical Store, Al Nahdha Hospital, MOH, Oman chaired the session.

Sessions on Clinical Pharmacy were conducted by Dr.YosryElsaid, Oman College of Health Sciences, Pharmacy Program, Ministry of Health, DrAhmed A. Abusham, Assistant professor in Clinical Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy and Nursing, University of Nizwa, Ph. Turkiya Al Balushi, Radiopharmacist, Royal Hospital Nuclear Medicine/Molecular Imaging Center, Muscat, and Ph. Israa Al Lawati ,Clinical Pharmacist at Al-Masarra Hospital. The topics included Patient Counseling, Enhancing Pharmacist Role in Patient-centered Collaborative Care, Ensuring Safe and Quality Radiopharmaceutical Use in Nuclear Medicine andthe Implementation of Clinical Pharmacy Service in the Psychiatric Hospital in Oman. The sessions were chaired by Dr. Anil Philip, Associate Dean, College of Nursing and Pharmacy, University of Nizwa and Ph. Raid M. Al Sabri, Director of Pharmaceutical care and medicine store, Khoula hospital.

The workshopsonPharmacovigilance and Medication safety culture conducted by Dr. Shirly Samson Varugheseand Ms. Alia Suleiman Al Salehi, DGPA &DC, MoH, Oman and Ph. Ghalib Al Maawalyand Ph. Zahra Al Lawati, Royal Hospital, Muscat respectivelywere well attended.

The students, working Pharmacists and scientists shared their research findings in the form of poster presentations. Best research presentations received awards.

The audience enjoyed the fruitful discussions with the speakers.Overall, the conference was a huge success and provided a platform forhealth care professionals to discuss new researches and learn from each other.
