Dept. of Medical Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the science that deals with drugs, their mechanism of action, side effects and indications in clinical conditions. Pharmacology in earlier times dealt mostly with study of the structure and chemical composition, but now emphasis is given more on the therapeutic applications and rational prescription writing.
Objectives of this course are:

  1. To learn the cellular mechanism of action of each of the major classes of pharmacological agents (i.e. drugs and other foreign substances)
  2. To develop an understanding of how organ systems and whole body physiology are affected by cellular actions of pharmacological agents
  3. To be able to apply the knowledge of cellular mechanisms to predict therapeutic and adverse effects of drugs.
  4. To practice the use of critical thinking skills to manage therapeutic problems.

The teaching of Pharmacology involves mostly the didactic lectures. Small group activities are done to enhance critical problem solving skills in the students.
A thorough knowledge of Pharmacology is necessary for patient care and management in the clinical years to real time practice as Medical Doctors.
